5 Ways To Help You Water Your Plants Even When You’re Not At Home
On December 2, 2021 by Dustin Carroll
Different from taking care of an uneven lawn, plants require our constant care, and indoor plants that have not been watered for a few days may wilt. In fact, there are several methods that can keep the plants green even when we are not at home or work for a long time.
Use Dishes
This can be a good solution for simple plants that don’t require special care. All you need is a draining pot and a saucer. It could help to keep your plant watering for at least 2-3 days. All you need to do is:
- Choose a saucer of the appropriate size and should be equal to or slightly larger than the potted plant.
- Fill it with water and place your plant on it. Make sure the plant is placed in a drainage pot so it has access to water.
DIY Watering Pot
This method can work great for plants that should be watered daily, however, the water in the pot can only ensure the need of liquid for 5 days. You will need a bottle with an aluminum cap to be able to do:
- Take a nail and drive the nail through the cap, making 5 small holes. Do it carefully, starting from the center of the lid.
- Fill the bottle with water.
- Dig a hole in your potting soil and place the bottle upside down.
Prepare A “Bath” For The Tree
This is best for plants that need a lot of water and don’t get a lot of sun because you’ll need to place the plant in the bathroom. So follow these steps:
- Fill the tub with the water you think your plant needs.
- Spread a towel over the water so as not to scratch your tub.
- Place the plant in the tub, making sure the pot has proper drainage.
With this method, you can be sure that your plant can have enough water for one weeks.
Make A Chain Drip System

This is the solution for those who are away from home for a longer time, from 1 to 3 weeks. You can even use it to water certain plants. All you need to do is:
- Get a cotton rope – make sure it’s cotton, as it’s the most absorbent material to infuse water into the soil.
- Place one end of the rope in the soil and the second end in the cup of water.
- Water the plant and fill the jar with water.
Make A Greenhouse Out Of Plastic Bags

This is one of the very easy methods and can be a really permanent solution because it can keep your plants green for 6 to 8 months. Carefully follow these steps to get everything right:
- Place 4 wooden stakes in each corner of the pot.
- Water the plant as usual, do not over water. Make sure you move it out of direct sunlight to avoid it heating up.
Wrap your tree in a plastic bag. The bag should be large enough that the leaves do not touch the bag.
